Rip's Rookery at Jefferson Island Rip Van Winkle Gardens now features an 80-feet-wide turn-off and a small foot bridge to make it more convenient for photographers to gain access to the bird sanctuary-rookery. Visitors no longer have to park on the road shoulder and wade across a flooded ditch, said Rip Van Winkle Gardens owner Mike Richard.

Richard also installed an interpretive sign providing information on the bird sanctuary.
Rip's Rookery is located on your way to the gardens (before you enter the gates) on the left side of Rip Van Winkle Road right after the Jefferson Island Road intersection.

Visiting is free. Just respect the wildlife and watch for gators! I didn't see that little guy until a local photographer pointed it out. It looked like a stick from the distance...
