Loreauville was first known as Picotville. In the 1840’s it was named for Ozaire Loreau from France, who gave property to the Catholic Church and for the cemetery. In 1899, construction of a bridge over the Bayou Teche was completed. When Loreauville was incorporated on April 23, 1909, the population count was 291. The 2000 Census population count was 923. Since Loreauville has under 1,0000 residents, it is still classified as a village.
The surrounding area has several ship building companies, including, Neuville Boat Works, Inc., Breaux Brothers Enterprises, Inc. and Breaux’s Bay Craft Inc. Breaux’s Bay Craft, Inc. began building boats commercially in Loreauville in 1957.
