July is Park and Recreation Month across the United States and Iberia Parish is celebrating!

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. This year’s theme is “Out is In,” which was chosen by the public last fall.

The National Recreation and Park Association described this year as the year they are, “focusing on setting trends instead of following them, making 2014 the year people go outside, change their outlook, and get involved in their community through parks and recreation.”

In honor of the celebration, Lake Fausse Pointe State Park in St. Martinville will be holding a “Trail Treasure Hunt” every Saturday of July 2014 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Competitors can win a free canoe rental for a whole day! Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by someone 16 or over. Registration is now open and closes at 9:30 a.m. on the event date.

Iberia Parish offers other outdoor opportunities at its parks including a man-made beach at Cypremort Point State Park, which is the only destination near the Gulf of Mexico that can be reached by car. The half-mile stretch of beach affords opportunities for fishing, crabbing, water skiing, windsurfing and sailing. Go for the day or stay the week, either way, a beach-getaway here is a summer must-do.

New Iberia City Park has numerous playgrounds, a pool, recreation center, walking track, two softball fields, picnic pavilions, meditation garden, gazebo, horseshoe pit, senior citizens building, public boat launch, seven tennis courts and a weight room. Pack a picnic and get ready for a great day with the family in this action-packed park.

At the Willow Wood Park Multi-Purpose Center, the eight hard surfaced tennis courts and other athletic fields available will have kids ready to run and stay active all summer long. Parents can sign the kids up for one of the parks day camps or summer programs.

For a more "X-treme" summer, check out Bayou Wheels Skatepark at 300 Parkview Dr. in New Iberia. The park is suitable for all skater skill levels. There is a BMX course and a 6 foot half pipe that will have skaters of all ages ready to show off their best moves. Helmet and pad rentals are available at the park.

When the sun gets too hot, head over to Cajun RVera Resort & SugArena @ Acadiana Fairgrounds and cool off in the lazy river, or cruise over to Bayou Pins for some classic family fun bowling.
